HAIM may be the band I've been waiting for my entire adult life. An updated Fleetwood Mac crossed with Pat Benetar and a dash of Destiny's Child, simply put, these ladies fucking rock. It took me a while to get into them because I'd been going through a real classic-rock-ONLY phase and somehow didn't put it together that HAIM's sound fit perfectly into my classic-rock-desert-road-trip version of happiness.
Raised in southern California, the sisters grew up listing to 70s rock with their parents and started out by playing covers together as a family band. In 2006 they formed HAIM and began to infuse a little bit of 90s R and B influence into their songwriting. The result, 2013's Days Are Gone, may be the perfect pop-rock album, with every track hovering safely in belt-it-out singalong territory. Jon and I were lucky enough to catch their sold out show in Paris a couple weeks ago, which I have to say was one of the best live shows I've ever seen, and several things struck me as we were watching them play.
For one thing, these babes are highly skilled musicians. Each girl is proficient in more than one instrument which they frequent switch up from song to song. Secondly, they rocked so hard that the building shook, and on more than occasion I forgot where I was and assumed I was at a Led Zeppelin concert circa 1974. And finally, HAIM are feminism at it's best and most glorious. With their long hair in their faces and oversized t-shirts, the girls didn't need sexy costumes or back-up dancers (which have their time and place) to completely captivate the crowd. Just the three of them (plus a drummer) with their voices and instruments were enough to bring the fucking house down. They truly are poster girls for the raw power that women are capable of, and we can't get enough of it. All hail HAIM.

We couldn't have said it better ourselves. |
Here's a clip from the Paris show we were at that I think illustrates my point. It was not what we were expecting, but it was so much more.
Followed by the full album for your listening pleasure, if for some reason you don't have it on your turntable yet.

First it was Toronto that released its figures for house sales in August, and then just hours later came the news from Vancouver and its sales for homes.
